Politicians to share views at event hosted on Benbecula

How women can influence decision-making has been a talking point in the islands for several months and, appropriately, will be the focus of a special event coming up this month to mark International Women’s Day.
Following the successful ‘Women into Politics’ workshop held online earlier this year, the conversation is set to continue at 6.30pm on 8th March 2022. North Uist and Benbecula Locality Partnership is hosting the event, which will take place at the Dark Island Hotel.
“It was clear from those who attended the Elect Her event there was an appetite to continue the conversation,” explained development officer, Jemma MacVicar.
“International Women’s Day is this year running with the theme ‘Ending the Bias on Gender Equality’ and it is therefore an ideal opportunity for more discussion.”
Jemma added that the event is open to women with an interest in taking on a political role or anyone, female or male, who wishes to support women looking to become involved in politics. Discussion will concentrate on how to overcome the barriers women face and the overall aim of the event is to provide a safe and supportive environment to talk about the issues that matter to women.
Guest speakers Ariane Burgess MSP and Cllr Rachael King from Orkney Council will attend virtually to share their experiences entering politics and to answer questions.
“It was important to bring in guest speakers who could relate to the challenges local women have described,” continued Jemma.
“I began researching female councillors in other rural and island locations and Cllr Rachael King stood out. Rachael, while a councillor representing an island community, is also a mother and carer, roles many women here also juggle. It was clear, after speaking with her, that she could relate to the challenges faced but also demonstrates that these experiences enhance what you can offer to your community as a councillor.
“Ariane Burgess MSP is vocal on many issues which are of serious concern here, particularly around the climate emergency, regeneration of coastal communities and becoming a more sustainable community. I am delighted she can join us to share her journey into Scottish Government.
“I hope the event will inspire and give confidence to those who want to take the first step towards standing for election and also bring together a group with innovative ideas on where improvements can be made to the current system.”
Places at the event, which is free to attend, should be booked in advance (email development@nubp.org or call 07795510927). If you are unable to attend in person can email to request a link to join on Teams.
