Local fiddle tutor Anna Black has won praise from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar for her outstanding work rejuvenating traditional music amongst young people in the islands.
Anna from North Uist is renowned for her role in the award-winning band, Beinn Lee. She also has a deep commitment to strengthening the culture of the islands through her love of traditional music and Gaelic.
Anna started teaching youngsters to play the fiddle in 2019 and since then has inspired more and more to take up the instrument. She is now taking her teaching across the water to Barra, where she will have the opportunity to engage with more young people to allow them further opportunities to develop confidence and skill in traditional music.
“It’s a privilege to teach in the communities I grew up with and care about so deeply,” said Anna.
“The enthusiasm of the young people is incredible and it’s exciting to see so many new fiddlers coming through. I feel very lucky to be part of passing on our music, stories and Gaelic culture.”
