Three days of glorious golf
Three days of golf tee’d off at the world-famous Askernish Golf club on Friday, 26th August.
Participants from as far a field as Australia, Finland and the US, joined local players for three days of cracking golf. Mixed weather didn’t hold them back, but plans were nearly scuppered when the Lochboisdale ferry was cancelled on the Thursday – leaving many competitors stranded.
It wasn’t all about the golf and there were plenty of celebratory events to keep the 140 competitors and the local community entertained throughout the weekend. Live music from Shindig on Friday evening, was followed on the Saturday by a fine performance from the Lionacleit School Pipe Band, with Nollie MacKinnon and Friends playing up a storm at the evening ceilidh.
Prizewinners in the three main events were:
Askernish Scratch
Allan MacLean 78
Mollaidh Nicholson 86
Askernish Open Handicap Finaly Macleod 70
Anne Roe 67
Mackenzie & Ebert Quaich Allan L. MacDonald 40
International Texas Scramble
Hector MacIntyre
Hank Byzinski
Derek Byzinski
Geraldine Hughes 50
Designed in 1891 by Old Tom Morris himself, Askernish course is world-renowned and regularly features on best club listings. Earlier this year the Club was voted 36th best club in the UK and Ireland, but has missed out on other opportunities as one of the event organisers Gary Young explains: “Twice over the past year we have had scheduled visits by magazines and golfing organisations to come and rate us cancelled due to ferry issues. These rankings count for a lot in the golfing world and missing out on those opportunities translates to a loss of business for us.”
