North Uist Agricultural Society invited over 60s and their families to Hosta Hall on 10 January 2026 to enjoy some soup, sandwiches and home baking in their contribution to the RSABI ‘Plough On’ campaign.
RSABI, the charity that supports people in Scottish agriculture, is running the campaign to recognise the dedication and lifelong commitment of senior farmers, crofters and farm workers, while helping to tackle loneliness and isolation during the darker winter months.
More than 70 people were in attendance to enjoy lunch at Hosta Hall. Comann Eachdraidh Uibhist a Tuath provided crofting related photographs from past times to look back on. The day was a great success, demonstrating the importance of appreciating senior crofters and how strong the islands are as an agricultural community. £179 was raised on the day to support the work of RSABI.
Anne MacLellan of North Uist Agricultural Society said: “We decided to organise an event for older members in the community and this aligned perfectly with RSABI’s ‘Plough On’ campaign to celebrate the contribution of older crofters and farmers.
“RSABI secured sponsorship for us from NFU Mutual Lochalsh, Skye and Outer Hebrides.
“It was a lovely day and definitely something we would do again. RSABI has already offered support for a similar event in 2027.”
