Service with a smile at Repair Cafe

Lamps, clocks, furniture and clothes have been saved from landfill thanks to volunteers at a new pop-up Repair Cafe.

Designed to normalise the idea of fixing things, instead of discarding and buying new, repair cafes bring people together to share ideas and learn new skills.

The first local repair cafe, held last month in Grimsay, saw volunteer repairers Duncan MacClure, Ruairidh MacDonald, Christine Mitchell and Simon Davies give their time and expertise to save nineteen items from landfill.

The event was described as a success, with volunteers giving a much valued “service with a smile”.

There are plans to hold further repair cafe pop-up events in different locations throughout the islands.

Funding received from the Scottish Communities Landfill Fund allowed for the purchase of a PAT testing machine, tools and materials.

Sorcha Monk and Emily Durie from UCVO created a Third Sector Community Climate Action Plan for Uist in collaboration with Community Energy Scotland, local residents and community groups, funded by Carbon Neutral Islands, a Scottish Government initiative, resulting in the Repair Cafe.
